TARA
Iâm worried about his response. âYou did this on purpose, Blake?â I ask. Itâs the first time Iâve said his name.
âYou forget, sweetness, that you are the one that rented the boat. I should accuse you of trying to seduce me,â he retorts.
I glare at him, my eyes burning into his, and fury almost chokes me. âAre you kidding me? You think that I owe you something?â
His eyes conveyed his fury, but his voice is calm. âJesus, calm down. No, you donât owe me anything!â he replies sharply.
âGood, because I wouldnât sleep with you even if you were the last man onââ
âThe last man on this island? Because, coincidently, I am,â he says, chuckling.
I give him a hostile glare. âDo you think Iâm going to sleep with you just because weâre stuck here together? Never! Do you hear me?â
His gaze slides over my body, slowly and seductively, and my traitorous body aches for his touch.
âYou will,â he says. âNot because I ask you to or because weâre stuck here together, but because you want to.â
I ignore the tingling in the pit of my stomach and my racing pulse. âYou conveniently forget that I know what a man-whore you are. Arenât you forgetting that Iâve been your assistant for the last four months? You canât keep a woman in your life for more than two months, tops. You think I want to be your next victim?â I reply my voice cold and lashing.
Pensively, he looks away. âYeah, I havenât been myself these last few months. I was dealing with my own demons; I shouldnât have been dating anyone. But Iâm human, and I make mistakes. I called each of those women yesterday and profusely apologized.â
I wonder if heâs baiting me.
âThey did nothing wrong. Theyâre perfectly fine young ladies. Their only flaw was that they werenât you. Which is stupid when you think about it. We spent one hour together when we met. You were crying, and I comforted you. I was in a relationship for two years before I met you. We were planning to get married, but then she decided that her career was more important.â
I frown, not knowing if I should believe him.
âI shouldnât have kissed you that night,â he says, and with a long sigh, he stands up.
Thatâs my cue to change the subject because I donât want to talk about that night with him. The man I met that night doesnât exist. I avoid eye contact, feigning interest in the beautiful landscape, my stomach fluttering and my mind racing.
I look at him from the corner of my eye and see that his expression has turned blank.
âOh my God, my parents will be sick with worry. And Liz and Lisa and your cousin Jake.â
âI know. Iâll get you out of here, I promise. Get up, Tara. We need to walk to the other side of the island. Thereâs a house there. We can spend the night and then see what we can do about getting back to Pole Island tomorrow.
